Chiropractic good for neck pain and safer than drugs

A study done in 1996 and reported in The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows that Chiropractic care is not only better than NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.) at relieving neck pain but that it is safer as well.
The autbors of the study noted that tlley we.’e unable to locate any randomized, controlled tests that examined the appropriate use and effectiveness of NSAIDS for neck pain. They conclude that cervical manipulation, the generic, non-specific medical tenn for Chiropractic spinal adjustments, is safer than the use of NSAIDS by a factor of several hundred times.
NSAIDS are the typical medical treatment for tllese situations and work by raising the body’s tlueshold of pain perception. NSAIDS have been shown to cause problems ranging from gastrointestinal bleeding to kidney failure to deatb.
By way of commentary, tlle use of NSAIDS for tbe treatment of spinal problems leads to very serious problems in thousands of people every year. Numerous studies have shown over and ove’r that Chiropractic is a safe and effective way to con’ect spinal problems, the pain they cause as well as tbe resulting body malfunction. The Chiropractic Solution to Neck Pain

Neck pain is among the most comman complaints that incite patients to seek chiropractic care. And for good reason, doctors of chiropractic, like Dr. Borio, are experts at eliminating the spinal problems associated with neck ache.

Curvaceous Concerns

Dr. Borio finds that patients with neck (cervical) pain often suffer from a straightening or reversal of the neck’s natural curve. When viewed from the side, the cervical spine should form an arch that’s most convex at mid-neck. However, many people – especially those who work at desks or computers – have cervical spines that jet forward (military neck), or even form reversed curves.

Studies show that a straightened or reversed curve weakens the deep muscles of the neck, becausec these muscles are forced to hold the spine in an anatomically ill-suited posture (Australian Journal of Physiotherapy 1998;44:210). And, weakened muscles bolster the risk of injury and pain. In addition, a flawed cervical curve disrupts the neck’s biomechanics (the way joints, muscles and bones move together). Are Adjustments the Answer to Neck Pain?

How does chiropractic care alleviate neck pain? Dr. Borio corrects areas in the spine where movement is restricted or bones (vertebrae) are misaligned. Not surprisingly, these dysfunctional segments, called vertebral subluxations, are often detected in the spines of patients with straightened or reversed cervical curves.

Dr. Borio corrects vertebral subluxations with gentle maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments. Research shows that these specialized maneuvers restore motion and alignment to the spine, in turn warding off the disorders associated with vertebral subluxations, including neck pain.

One study enrolled 119 patients with neck or back pain. Standard measurement tools were used to evaluate the subjects for pain and disability. The patients underwent chiropractic care, including receiving chiropractic adjustments. Subjects visited their chiropractors an average of 12 times over a 4-week period.

Findings revealed an average 54% drop in pain and a 49% drop in disability among subjects with neck pain. “Patients attending a private chiropractic clinic for treatment of mechanical neck pain or low-back discomfort had statistically significant reductions ,in their pain-related disability after treatment,” concluded the study’s authors. “These results indicate that chiropractic manipulation [adjustment] is beneficial for the treatment of mechanical neck pain and LBP (Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics 2000;23:307-11).

Besides wHoring the neck’s natural curve, resei\rch suggests that adjustments to the spine also quell another necK ache instigator: muscle tension (Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics 1999;22: 14953).

Beyond Pain Killers

The chiropractic approach to ending neck pain is a revolutionary one, because it seeks to correct the underlying cause of the disorder, rather than masking symptoms with drugs. That’s why chiropractic may be more effective than painkillers for longterm neck pain prevention.

One scientificostudy compared chiropractic adjustments to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAII;:>s) like Advil@, Motrin@ and Or!idis@. The report concluded that; “The best evidence indicates that cervical manipulation [chiropraCtic adjustment] for neck pain is much safer than the use of NSAIDs, by as much as a factor of several hundred times. There is no evidence that indicates NSAID use is any more effective than cervical manipulation for neck pain” (Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics 1996;18:530-6).

Another study compared the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments, NSAIDs and acupuncture. As part’of the analysis, 77 patients with neck or back pain underwent one of the three treatments. After one month, only chiropractic recipients experienced significant improvement. Specifically, neck pain patients reported a 25% reduction in disability and a 33% reduction in pain (Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics 1999;22:376-81).

A Comprehensive Approach

In addition to chiropractic adjustments, doctors of chiropractic often use other all-natural approaches to keep neck pain at bay Theseadjunctive therapies include ergonomic suggestions, postural training, physiotherapy, heat and/or cold, specific exercise programs, nutritiopal supplements and dietary modifications.

Psychological factors may also inflil:o ence an individual’s risk of neck discomfort. For instance, studies show that a patient’s attitude about their work predics their odds of developing neck pain. Specifically, individuals who feel that they lack control in their work environment have a significantly elevated risk of neck ache (The Back Letter – 2000;15:25). Additional research indicates that stress, depression and anxiety also up the risk of neck disability. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD): Care and Disorder Questionable.

According to the Associated Press on November 19, 1998, a National Institutes of Health committee reported that doctors still don’t know how best to treat or even diagnose ADD/ADHD.

Dr. David J. Kupfer, chairman of the panel and professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh says, “There is no current validated diagnostic test for ADD/ADHD. He also pointed out that there are no studies that have examined the long term effects of common treatment drugs such as Ritalin.

Conclusions reached by the panel members include:

Panel member Janis Ferre of the Utah Governor’s Council for People With Disabilities said there’s inconsistency in diagnosing ADD/ADHD. “This results in over-diagnosis and under-diagnosis.”
Panel member Donald Berry of the Duke University Medical Center criticized the lack of long-term effect studies on Ritalin and other strong, mind-altering drugs used in treating ADD/ADHD and said he thought they are prescribed too often.
Panel member Dr. Robert Baltimore of the Yale University School of Medicine said, “There is no gold standard for therapy, so it is difficult to look at the [current] prescribing practice and say what is appropriate or not appropriate.”
Other conclusions reached by the panel were:

Although Ritalin may correct some behavior problems, there is no evidence that it helps children’s academic performance.
There are no independent, validated tests for ADD/ADHD.
Research that even establishes the validity of ADD/ADHD as a bona-fide disorder “continues to be a problem.”
Doctors and schools often do a poor job of communicating when treating ADD/ADHD and follow-up is often poor.
By way of commentary, this panel estimated that up to 5% of children are truly affected with ADD/ADHD, if indeed it even exists. Why then in some classrooms are upwards of 30% of the children on Ritalin? Could it be that in many school districts the school gets additional money from the state for each child diagnosed?

If your child has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, you must seriously determine if you want a questionable disorder being diagnosed with questionable standards, being treated with questionable, high-powered drugs that have questionable long-term effects for your child. No doubt there’s a better approach we could be taking.

The amount of heavy books and gear children carry to school is growing every year. It seems our kids are carrying more and more weight in their backpack, as they set off for the school day with books, gym clothes, and gear for sports and extracurricular activities.

A 2012 study by physical therapy students at the Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences examined the effects of various backpack loads on elementary schoolchildren’s posture and postural compensations as demonstrated by a change in forward head position. Digital photographs were taken of each subject standing without a backpack, and then with the loaded backpack before and after walking 6 minutes at free walking speed. This was repeated over three consecutive weeks using backpacks containing randomly assigned weights of 10%, 15%, or 20% body weight of each respective subject. The craniovertebral angle was measured using digitizing software, recorded and analyzed.

The subjects demonstrated immediate and statistically significant changes in craniovertebral angle, indicating increased forward head positions upon donning the backpacks containing 15% and 20% body weight. Following the walking of 6 minutes, the CVA demonstrated further statistically significant changes for all backpack loads indicating increased forward head postures. For the 15 & 20% of body weight conditions, more than 50% of the subjects reported discomfort after walking, with the neck as the primary location of reported pain.

The study concludes that primary schoolchildren should carry no more than 10% of their body weight in their backpacks. For a 60 lb elementary school student, that is a mere 6 lbs.

Mobilizing the Body Against Arthritis

 

Spinal Pathophysiology refers to the osteoarthritic degenerative changes that occur in a spine that has lost its normal range of motion. The journal Clinical Biomechanics reported as far back as 1987 (issue 2:223-229) that joint immobility, such as that which occurs in the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, can lead to permanent damage in as little as two weeks.

According to T. Videman, author of the study, “The evidence in this review shows that immobilizing healthy joints in experimental animals can lead inexorably to osteoarthritis. With respect to [human] patients, it can be postulated that immobilization, for whatever cause, will initiate a pathogenic [disease producing] chain of musculo-skeletal degenerative changes.”

And the joints don’t have to be stuck for a single long period, either. A joint immobilized one day a week for 14 weeks shows the same amount of damage as one immobilized for 14 days in a row. The damage accumulates over all the time the joint was immobilized.

How does this relate to Chiropractic? When a spinal subluxation occurs, the joints become stuck or immobile, unable to move in their normal range of motion and the degenerative process known as osteoarthritis begins. According to Videman, if this immobility is not corrected within two weeks, the osteoarthritis becomes permanent. These permanent changes can’t be reversed but they can be kept from getting worse by restoring the mobility to the stuck joint. Chiropractic Care for Sports Injuries

Whether you or your child is an aspiring Tiger Woods or a backyard Jordan, participating in sports is a great way to stay in shape, meet new friends or learn valuable skills such as teamwork. Participation in sports is not without risk. Children are especially at risk.

 

Shoe Savvy

Reduce your child’s risk of injury by investing in quality athletic shoes prior to each season. Look for sneakers with adequate cushioning and arch support. Some children also benefit from custom-made inserts. Other young athletes require braces or taping. (Ask your chiropractor for specific recommendations geared to your child’s unique foot type.)

Many of the footwear styles popular with today’s youths provide little protection. Lack of cushioning increases the risk of impact-related injuries such as stress fracture and shin splints. Flimsy arch support allows the foot to roll inward, in turn disrupting the alignment of the leg, knee and hips. Skewed posture in the lower limbs results in a disproportionate allocation of force on joints during walking or running – spurring injury. Shoes with “air cell” soles also fail to properly distribute pressure. Because the hips are connected to the spine, inadequate footwear may even spawn vertebral subluxations and back pain.

Take Safety Seriously

Lack of safety equipment and faulty equipment are major causes of childhood sports’ injuries. While most coaches insist on using appropriate equipment during organized practices, many youngsters fail to use such safe guards when practicing on their own.

Insist that your children use safety gear while practicing. To ensure this occurs, make your wishes known to the respective coaches and your children.

Stretching is another good “follow my example” suggestion for parents. Stretching – before and after exercise – is crucial for anyone wishing to avoid a sports-related injury. 

Training Time

To keep your children injury-free during the sports’ season, keep them active throughout the off-season. Just like adults, a dramatic increase in children’s workout intensity will spur muscle strain. Unfortunately, the drastic cutbacks in many schools’ physical education curriculum has resulted in poor-quality programs or no programs at all. So, keep your children active in the "off season". Or, make a point to exercise with your children several days a week. Maintain your youngsters’ interest by scheduling a variety of activities with other families, such as hikes, bike rides and softball games.

A commitment to physical exercise is an important step in maintaining personal health. However, due to today’s hectic lifestyles, many patients have difficulty squeezing a fitness program into their schedules. Walking a jogging are great ways to fitness into a busy schedule.

Working Out and Sports: Playing it Safe

Daily stress, aerobic activities that push the body to its outer limits, and lifting weights put abnormal amounts of stress on bones, muscles and joints. Full speed collisions, falls to the ground, and head and limbs being rammed, pulled and twisted beyond their normal ranges. Even seemingly normal, easy, or moderate exercise. The development, growth and function of our bodies is directed and controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Luckily the brain is in a vault of bone. However, although the spinal cord and spinal nerves are also protected by the bones of the spinal column, these bones are freely moveable and can become damaged or misaligned easily.
